The internet looks set to grind to a halt sometime after 201 unless action is taken by ISPs now. The reason lies in the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses which identify devices connected to the internet.
The whole internet economy and the viability of websites being reached by those who need to access their services and products hinges on the simple ability of devices to connect to the internet. At the moment this connection is made through an Internet protocol running on IPv4 which has some 4.3 billion possible Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. At the time of writing this 85 per cent of these available addresses have been used up which means that, at the current rate, by the year 2011 they will all have been exhausted and the expensive, brand new computer you bought to access the web will be a rather expensive paper weight for all its ability to fulfill that purpose.
A recent report by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) highlighted the fact that in a repetition of the millennium bug issue of 1999/2000 when computer manufacturers were forced to address the date change issue in the OS of their machines, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have so far failed to upgrade to IPv6 which provides for unlimited IP addresses with the result being a proverbial brick wall that we are all heading for.
In all likelihood, given the fact that ISPs make their money from the very ability of people to access the internet, they will upgrade their infrastructure to IPv6 and the problem which has been highlighted will never come to pass. The fact does remain however that in the world of computing and the web it is necessity rather than planned design that guides most developments. A process which whilst we understand it we never condone it.
At WebDirectStudio.com we approach each project through a brief which works up in an exhaustive fashion the possible permutations that arise and then works to pick those most likely to lead to success. Are you in need of a ‘simple’ business card? We actually approach this project design with the view that two years down the line you will be wildly successful and your business card will have to do more than just sell your services, it will have to reinforce your brand and stamp each person who sees it with the depth and power of your business’ image.
It is a similar pattern we adopt with anything that has to do with the web. If you want a website, if you are looking for just web design or if you are in need of some web programming, we actually brainstorm each project to see what the direct benefits will be to you, what you will gain in terms of clientele and online sales and how you could develop in the future.
